Between picking a fun, creative costume to wear or binge-eating your favorite candy, it's hard to decide what the best part of Halloween is. Although the day can be filled with fun tricks or treats, everyone must take the proper precautions to remain safe and visible while celebrating. According to the National Safety Council, due to lack of visibility and a significant amount of low lighting, pedestrians who are trick or treating are twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween than any other night of the year.
Here are some tips to keep in mind while trick or treating this year:
Bring Flashlights or Lanterns – Carrying small lights/lanterns with you is a great way to make visibility easier. They also help trick-or-treaters avoid hazards on the road, such as potholes, cracks, or other unforeseen objects. If your child is complaining about having too much stuff in their hands, you can try lights that strap onto the top of their head or hats.
Wear Reflective Lights or LED Strips – Costumes aren't always bright colors, so it can be hard to see trick-or-treaters walking along the sides of the streets. Parents can easily improve their child's costume visibility by adding reflective strips. Wearable LED lights and glow sticks help too.
Supervision – Even if trick or treating in a safe environment, it's crucial that trick-or-treaters always have adult supervision. This will help excited children focus on their safety while traveling from door to door.
Makeup over Masks – When children have masks on their faces, they may likely have trouble spotting oncoming cars or hazards on the road. Face makeup is the perfect way to keep your child in costume without affecting their visibility.
