Murder Case Returns to National Spotlight
van der Veen, Hartshorn, Levin and Lindheim attorney Bruce L. Castor Jr., a former Montgomery County District Attorney, is featured in an Oxygen Network “Philly Homicide” episode regarding his prosecution of a homicide case in 2002. The case involved the murder of Alice Hufnagle Lauman, who was the mother of six children and grandmother of ten.
The television special examines the investigation that led to the arrest and conviction of Jeffrey Ivan Vample, a 24-year-old Norristown, Pennsylvania, resident. Through interviews with key investigators, archival footage, and case documentation, the episode provides viewers with an in-depth look at one of Montgomery County's most significant prosecutions of the early 2000s.
From the Crime Scene to the Courtroom
As District Attorney in 2002, Castor served as lead prosecutor in the investigation of Mrs. Hufnagle Lauman's death, discovered on November 23, 2002. During the initial investigation, Castor made a public statement eliminating the victim's estranged husband from consideration as a suspect after he discovered the body. This decision enabled investigators to redirect their focus, ultimately leading to the arrest of Jeffrey Ivan Vample.
In court, the prosecution presented evidence indicating premeditated intent. The physical evidence recovered included a mask with blood traces. Vample was charged with first-degree murder, rape, robbery, burglary, and related offenses. The prosecution's investigation revealed the theft of personal items from the victim, which was identified as consistent with trophy-taking behavior in similar cases.
The case gained significant attention due to its random nature, as the perpetrator and victim had minimal prior connection. Of the case’s impact on the community, Castor stated, "This is the kind of case that makes the public blanche because this is a case of a random act of violence involving people who do not know each other particularly well." This factor contributed to heightened public safety concerns within Montgomery County during the investigation period.
